Matt received his undergraduate education at the United States Military Academy at West Point (2002), his Master of Strategic Studies, with merit, from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand (2012), and his PhD in International Relations at the University of Reading (UK) with Professors Colin Gray and Beatrice Heuser (2018).

Matt is proud to have co-founded the Modern War Institute at West Point, and founded the Homeland Defense Institute at the US Air Force Academy.

He currently holds, or has held, academic appointments with West Point, the Arizona State University, the Royal United Services Institute, and the Council on Foreign Relations.

He’s a professor of practice with the Arizona State University, and has spoken with ASU about his course on camera.
